Story about the Design:
Silla de Gaucho is an equestrian carré centered on a richly decorated gaucho saddle, with saddle cloth, stirrup, rope, floral ornament and graphic tack details arranged as a bold, layered composition. Hermès states that Antonio Carrau drew on childhood memories of Uruguay and researched Uruguayan decorative motifs to create the colorful floral saddle. The design is described by Hermès as reminiscent of gaucho saddles from the 19th and 20th centuries. The visual language is closely tied to Carrau’s collage practice: the image was created from small torn pieces of paper, then meticulously assembled, giving the scarf its crisp and graphic spirit.
Artist's Story:
Antonio Carrau is an artist from Montevideo, Uruguay, born in 1988. His background is in graphic design, and his work is rooted in paper collage, layering and cut-paper image construction. Carrau describes paper as his main medium and explains that his work develops through observation, physical cutting, layering and discovery on the studio table. His own project archive identifies Silla de Gaucho as a silk scarf collaboration with Hermès for the SS24 collection, client Hermès, year 2024. The scarf translates his tactile paper-collage method into Hermès silk twill, keeping the clean graphic energy of cut shapes while linking the imagery to Uruguayan equestrian heritage.
Collector's Notes:
Public Hermès scarf collector discussions place Silla de Gaucho within the Spring/Summer 2024 silk twill 90 group and identify Antonio Carrau as the designer. Collector commentary highlights the design’s gaucho theme, with attention to the traditions and art of 19th- and 20th-century Gauchos and the design’s cultural link to Uruguay.
