Story about the Design: Magic Kelly is Dimitri Rybaltchenko’s sparkling, pop-art love letter to the legendary Hermès Kelly bag: the bag appears centred as a radiant, jewel-like silhouette, surrounded by stage-light rays, starbursts and “confetti” dots that mimic flashes of camera bulbs and glittering evening lights. The “magic” isn’t only the shimmer—collectors often point out the optical-illusion “Magic Eye” feel of the Kelly shape, designed to make the eye search for depth and hidden details (a playful puzzle scarf as much as a graphic accessory).
Artist's Story: Paris-based artist Dimitri Rybaltchenko comes from an Hermès carré lineage: his great-uncle Philippe Ledoux created classic Hermès scarf designs in the 1950s, and his father Vladimir Rybaltchenko followed—Dimitri grew up watching them draw. He recounts bringing his work to Hermès in June 1990 to show then-chairman Jean-Louis Dumas; one of his early motifs was accepted that day, and he has been creating designs for the maison ever since (he also designs beyond scarves, including watch dials).
Collector's Notes: In collector circles, Magic Kelly is frequently described as “hugely popular” thanks to the timeless Kelly-bag theme and the joyful sparkle effect, with many collectors owning (or hunting) multiple colourways.
