Story about the Design:
Les Folies du Ciel is Loïc Dubigeon’s imaginative sky-themed Hermès carré. The composition presents a dense airborne tableau of hot-air balloons, dirigibles, kites, flying boats, fish-shaped airships and other experimental flying machines, framed by a twisted rope border. Several of the vessels are printed with dates, including 1780, 1815 and 1841, giving the design the feeling of a whimsical illustrated archive of early aeronautic dreams. Public collector and resale references describe the motif as a celebration of the conquest of the air and the utopian fascination with human flight, including machines that remained fantastical projects rather than practical aircraft.

Artist's Story:
Loïc Dubigeon was a French artist associated with Hermès scarf design. Public artist references identify him as Loïc Dubigeon, born in Nantes in 1934 and deceased in 2003, from a family of shipowners. His broader artistic work included painting and seascapes, and he became especially known to Hermès collectors for detailed silk carré designs. Hermès officially identifies Loïc Dubigeon as the designer of Les Folies du Ciel in its later double-face scarf presentation, while resale and collector references also attribute the original 1984 carré to him.

Collector's Notes:
Les Folies du Ciel is a collector-favorite Dubigeon design because it combines technical-looking historical flying machines with bright, playful color and a strong graphic rope frame. Collector commentary highlights the design’s balance of scientific illustration and poetic fantasy, while resale references describe the print as sought after, especially in vivid colorways such as red or blue.
