Story: Dimitri Rybaltchenko reimagines the classic Springs design, originally created by his great-uncle Philippe Ledoux in 1974. With bold creativity, he transforms the motif into a cubic, kaleidoscopic puzzle, blending tradition with modernity. Hidden within the intricate details are symbols of Napoleon II’s phaeton—the bees, the Grande Croix of the Legion d’Honneur, and the imperial seal—each meticulously recreated from the life-sized carriage at Schönbrunn Palace. Can you piece it all together?

Dimitri Rybaltchenko and Philippe Ledoux are two generations of Hermès artists, each leaving a distinct mark on the brand’s history.

Philippe Ledoux (1903–1974) was a celebrated illustrator known for his detailed and refined equestrian and historical scenes. His work, rich in classicism and storytelling, became iconic in the world of Hermès scarves. Designs like Springs (1974) showcased his precision and love for heritage, often drawing inspiration from historical carriages, military traditions, and regal symbols. His artistic legacy remains a cornerstone of Hermès' silk creations.

His great-nephew, Dimitri Rybaltchenko, inherited this artistic passion and brought a modern, conceptual twist to Hermès designs. Infusing surrealism and optical illusions into his work, he reinterprets classics with bold, contemporary flair. His Springs redesign in cubic form pays homage to Ledoux while embracing a fresh, innovative perspective. Other notable designs, like Sous le Charme d’Orphée, reveal his fascination with mythology, dreamlike compositions, and intricate detail.

Together, Ledoux and Rybaltchenko represent the evolution of Hermès artistry—one rooted in tradition, the other pushing creative boundaries for the modern era.
