Story about the Design:
Grygkar’s winter tableau centers on a bustling frozen landscape with a horse-drawn sleigh, skaters, and onlookers in period dress; the wide border shows a charming “sequence” of skaters in motion, with trompe-l’œil fringe at the ends. Several reissue colorways in blue emphasise the frosty atmosphere, and collectors often remark on the delicate “blanc mat(te)” overlay used to give the ice a snowy sheen.
Artist's Story:
Hugo Grygkar (1907–1959) is widely regarded as the father of the Hermès carré: he designed the house’s first silk square in 1937 and went on to create more than one hundred designs, often working closely with Robert Dumas and drawing from the Hermès archives. Born in Munich to Czech parents, he settled in France in 1914 and trained in Paris before his prolific tenure at Hermès through the 1940s–1950s.
Collector's Notes:
• Documented colorways include several blues (from pale ciel to navy), prized for their versatility in winter wardrobes.
• The “blanc mat” frosted effect is a beloved detail noted by long-time scarf aficionados.
• Special titlings exist on some later pieces (e.g., resort-edition “Hermès Courmayeur”), which can add collectability.
