Story about the Design: La Comédie Italienne is Philippe Ledoux’s homage to commedia dell’arte, the improvisational Italian theatre tradition that emerged in the 16th century. The composition stages named stock characters across a proscenium-like setting beneath dramatic curtains, and this jacquard issue is especially notable for the woven instrument motifs that appear in the ground of the silk.
Artist's Story: Philippe Ledoux was born in Sheffield in 1903 to French parents, later returned to France, and studied drawing in Paris before beginning a long collaboration with Hermès under Robert Dumas in 1947. Hermès’ own Lanterne credits him with creating many of the house’s signature carrés, and public references place La Comédie Italienne among his 1962 designs.
