Story about the Design:
Equestrian art is a major theme in the Émile Hermès collection, and Della Cavalleria references a celebrated horsemanship treatise by German author Georg Engelhard von Löhneysen, printed in Bavaria in 1609. The original work, known for baroque illustrations, covers dressage, anatomy, tournaments, and festivals.
For the carré, Virginie Jamin builds the motif from harness elements, drawing with an engraver-like delicacy. In the Double Face edition, the design is intentionally split into two moods: a multicolored madras-like interpretation on one side and a more monochrome, fine-lined reverse.
Secondary scarf references also describe a metamorphosis-inspired, fantastical bestiary within the bridlework, with chimeric figures interlaced through bits, straps, and buckles.
Artist's Story:
Virginie Jamin is credited by Hermès as the designer of the Della Cavalleria motif, and for this design the house notes that she used harness pieces as her muse, working the line in the same way as engravers.
Architectural Digest describes Jamin as a French children’s illustrator who has created dozens of designs for Hermès, and highlights her archive-driven approach. In her collaboration with Hermès on the Tressages Équestres tableware, she studied the Hermès archives and historic saddlery catalogs, then translated ropes, cords, and straps into hand-drawn patterns that intentionally retain a lively, non-mechanical feel.
Collector's Notes:
The Double Face printing technique offers two distinct looks in one carré, making it easy to style the same scarf either boldly or more subtly by switching sides.
