Story about the Design:
Découpages adapts the visual language of Swiss paper-cutting to the Hermès carré format. The composition uses a symmetrical paper-cut effect with Alpine chalets, heart-shaped cutwork panels, cattle, horses, small rural figures, floral bouquets and foliage. The subject matter connects directly with the Pays-d’Enhaut tradition of papiers découpés, where local landscapes, alpine cattle drives, flowers and village life are frequent themes. In this scarf, Hermès translates that folk-art vocabulary into silk twill through layered borders, mirrored motifs and fine decorative linework.

Artist's Story:
Anne Rosat is a Belgian artist associated with the Swiss Alps and the Pays-d’Enhaut paper-cutting tradition. Public references state that she began making paper cuttings in 1969 after recreating a work by Johann Jakob Hauswirth for her husband, an antiques dealer. Her mature work preserves the regional vocabulary of découpages while adding color, layered papers and a personal sense of modernity. Hermès issued Découpages in 1997 using one of Rosat’s paper-cut designs, making this carré a direct textile interpretation of her folk-art practice.

Collector's Notes:
Public resale and collector-reference pages identify Découpages as a collectible Anne Rosat design from 1997. Carré Society describes the model as a collector’s item, rare and sought after, and reports one reissue in 2006. Le Grenier d’Amatxi also describes the design as fairly rare and fairly sought after by collectors.
