Story about the Design: Bagage à Main transforms an opened suitcase into an autobiographical still life. Hermès states that Rosa Maria Unda Souki drew on a life carried from Venezuela to France by way of Mexico, filling the composition with shoes, pastels, colored pencils, earrings, tubes of paint, poetry books, a childhood-style subway ticket, wild plants, feathers, and a kite. The result is a design about memory, travel, artistic tools, and the private objects that accompany a life in motion.
Artist's Story: Rosa Maria Unda Souki is a Venezuelan artist born in Caracas in 1977. According to her published biography, she entered the Armando Reverón Institute of Fine Arts in Caracas at age sixteen, graduated with highest honours in 1999, and then completed a master's degree in Art and Image Technology at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in 2002, focusing on photography and video. She moved to France in 2004, the same year her biography records that she won the First Painting Prize at Prix Signatures. Her artist biography also notes the Special Jury Prize at the Salon de Montrouge in 2011. Hermès Foundation further documents her 2017 solo exhibition at Atelier Hermès in Seoul, part of her long-running project on Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, where painting and documentary research were used to reconstruct memory, domestic space, and women's artistic experience.
