Story about the Design:
Jonathan Burton transforms Émile Hermès’ office into a mystery inspired by 1950s thrillers. Animals fill the room, with Zouzou, Leïla Menchari’s window-display rhinoceros, among the witnesses. An abandoned telephone, an overturned chair and a lost shoe suggest a hurried departure. Burton also conceals references to the address, 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, including highlighted telephone numbers and 24 cat paw prints. Looking closely turns the scarf into a puzzle, with clues scattered across its intricate interior.
Artist's Story:
Jonathan Burton is an English illustrator based in France whose collaborators include Hermès, The Folio Society and Royal Mail. His work moves between publishing and commissioned illustration. For Mystère au 24, he builds a narrative through an unusual viewpoint and small, deliberately placed clues. His own account of the drawing highlights its hidden references to the number 24, giving the viewer a part in discovering the story.
