Story about the Design:
Robert Dallet’s 1993 “Les Mustangs” celebrates the wild mustangs of the American West—cowboys driving a thundering herd across open country. In 2022, Hermès invited French illustrator-filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu to rework the scene as “Les Mustangs II,” keeping the dynamic cavalcade while rendering the horses in bold, comic-book-inspired color blocks that read like futuristic “armour.” The house’s double-face technique prints on both sides of the silk, giving two coordinated looks in one carré; the Potiron/Beige colorway blends warm pumpkin-orange borders with sandy neutrals for versatile styling.
Note: Hermès pioneered the modern double-face carré with Ugo Bienvenu’s “Wow!” in 2020—technology later applied to this design.
Artist's Story:
Robert Dallet (1923–2006) was a self-taught French wildlife artist renowned for anatomically precise yet lyrical depictions of animals. Invited by Hermès in the 1980s, he debuted the scarf “Kenya” in 1988 and went on to create many house icons; posthumous exhibitions with Hermès and Panthera—such as “Fierce and Fragile”—have highlighted his legacy. Ugo Bienvenu is a Paris-based illustrator and animation director who began collaborating with Hermès via short films; his first carré for the house, “Wow!” (2020), introduced the double-face print and shows his graphic, cinematic style that informs “Les Mustangs II.”
Collector's Notes:
Among collectors, the double-face series is prized for its craftsmanship and styling flexibility (two coordinated faces, slightly weightier hand). “Les Mustangs II” is frequently cited as a favorite reinterpretation, with forum members noting the joy of wearing both the vintage Dallet original and the Bienvenu double-face update; the Potiron/Beige colorway is especially appreciated for its easy pairing with neutrals and autumn palettes.
