About the Dossard Style:
The Dossard is a unique variation of the classic Hermès Carré 90, designed with a central opening—a subtle slit or rounded cut-out—intended to be worn over the head, much like a decorative bib or "dossard" (French for breastplate). This rare and innovative format allows the scarf to drape symmetrically over the shoulders, making it ideal for a more fashion-forward, structured look. Originally inspired by equestrian saddle blankets and ceremonial attire, Dossard scarves are highly sought after by collectors due to their unusual construction, limited production, and the way they elevate traditional scarf styling. The La Selle Imaginaire design is one of the few to have been produced in this special format, making it a standout piece in any Hermès collection.
The Dossard is a rare and innovative variation of the classic Hermès Carré 90, distinguished by a precisely engineered central cut-out that allows the scarf to be worn over the head, resting evenly across the chest and back—much like a ceremonial bib or horse saddlecloth. The name "Dossard" itself comes from equestrian and military culture, meaning "breastplate." This construction is not only visually striking but extremely difficult to manufacture. The scarf must be printed and cut with flawless alignment to maintain the integrity of the artwork despite the central opening, and it requires special hemming techniques that few workshops can execute at Hermès’ standards. As a result, Dossard scarves are produced in very limited quantities, and are considered rare gems among Hermès collectors. Designs like La Selle Imaginaire—already bold in their artistry—take on a sculptural and wearable form in the Dossard edition, making this a truly standout piece of silk craftsmanship.
