Story about the Design:
A love letter to penmanship, L’Art d’Écrire draws from the Enlightenment-era engravings in Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie chapter “l’art d’écrire.” The composition is framed by exuberant flourishes and teaching alphabets that name script styles such as “la lettre bâtarde” and “la lettre coulée,” with quills, inkwells and didactic cartouches anchoring each quadrant. In the Black/Vanilla colourway, bold noir calligraphy floats over a warm parchment-toned ground, evoking antique copybooks and the discipline of the writing master—an elegant, graphic neutral that ties beautifully.

Artist's Story:
Maurice Tranchant was a prolific mid-century Hermès carré designer whose work spans classic motifs and scholarly references. Beyond L’Art d’Écrire, notable designs include La Treille (1964), Les Jardiniers du Roy (1967) and Pavement (1970). His style often blends decorative arts, architecture and historical sources into finely balanced, instructional tableaux—perfectly suited to Hermès’s silk printing savoir-faire.

Collector's Notes:
Among Hermès aficionados, L’Art d’Écrire is a perennial “teacher’s pet”: a brainy, minimalist graphic that dresses up or down and makes a thoughtful gift for writers, scholars and graduates. Collectors prize early issues for their archival gravitas, while the crisp Black/Vanilla 1998 reissue is especially wearable and sought after. Across forums and blogs it’s often called out as “one of the most beautiful scarves produced by Hermès” and remains a staple in curated vintage shops.
