Story about the Design:
The motif celebrates military epaulettes—ornamental shoulder pieces that signal rank and ceremony—rendered as a lively parade of fringes, cords, stars, braids and polished insignia spread across the carré. In Hermès’ own description of the theme, the epaulettes “size each other up,” a playful nod to the regalia’s competitive splendour. The Double Face edition uses an advanced technique to print on both sides of the silk, giving you two harmonised colour stories—here Marine and Bleu Azur—in a single scarf. This innovation produces crisp linework and a subtle contrast between the face and reverse for versatile styling.
Artist's Story:
Caty Latham (also known as Cathy Latham-Audibert) is among Hermès’ most prolific scarf designers, active for over four decades. Her body of work includes beloved classics such as Les Clés (1965), Brandebourgs (1972), Ferronnerie (1970) and Oiseaux Migrateurs (1977). Latham’s graphic language often elevates historical objects—keys, braids, harness ornaments and, here, ceremonial epaulettes—into refined, symmetrical compositions tailored to the carré format.
Collector's Notes:
• Double Face printing: unlike simple “bleed-through,” Hermès’ Double Face carrés are truly printed on both sides—two coordinated versions of the design with precise registration, effectively giving “two scarves in one.” Collectors value the technical finesse and the subtle tonal shift from one side to the other.
• Season and colourway: the Double Face Epaulettes de gala debuted in SS23 with sought-after combinations including Marine/Bleu Azur/Corail—an especially wearable blue palette for denim or tailoring.
• Wear and care: the Double Face format remains supple while often measuring about 88.5 cm due to hand-rolling; style with knots that reveal both sides (simple bias fold, cowboy drape, or Ascot).
