Story about the Design:
“Cave Felem” is Christine Henry’s witty homage to Roman threshold mosaics such as Pompeii’s “Cave Canem.” Here, the warning flips from dog to cat: a stealthy feline hides among reeds and lotus-like foliage while the corners teem with tiny creatures—lizards, mice, ladybirds, bees, butterflies and snails—rendered as tiny tesserae. The Latin inscription CAVE FELEM appears in the design, reinforcing the classical nod. The Blue/Red colorway intensifies the mosaic effect: a saturated red field and border frame cool blues in the central medallion, giving dramatic contrast when tied. The scene’s spirit is mischievous rather than menacing; the cat is poised to pounce “more for play than for hunger.”

Artist's Story:
Christine Henry has collaborated with Hermès since the mid-1990s, drawing on myth, legend and the natural world. Her 1993 mosaic-style painting “Cave Felem”—inspired by her own cat—became the model for her first scarf design with the house, issued as a 90 cm silk carré in 1998. Her carré portfolio is known for narrative compositions, dense patterning and a keen eye for flora and fauna, qualities that “Cave Felem” showcases superbly.

Collector's Notes:
Within Hermès communities, “Cave Felem” is often described as a grail scarf: a one-season 1998 issue with strong demand across colorways. Collectors and specialist resellers frequently highlight it as “Rare/GRAIL.” Blue-based variants (often paired with red and orange) are well-documented by resellers and auction houses; pricing tracks condition closely, with mint examples commanding healthy premiums.
