Story about the Design:
“Grande Tenue” (Full Dress) celebrates equestrian ceremony. Its graphic layout frames a central cross-like panel encircled by braided cords and roping, with the corners depicting heraldic stable emblems and parade trappings. The motif draws on the Emile Hermès archives, notably the ceremonial “dress blankets” used at hunt meetings and competitions—wool covers with monogrammed cotton-check sleeves that identify distinguished stables. The result is a highly structured, symmetrical composition—classic d’Origny—that reads crisply in high-contrast colorways like black/green/red and has become an enduring Hermès icon through multiple reissues.
Artist's Story:
Henri d’Origny has been a pillar of Hermès design for decades, creating many of the house’s most beloved carrés (including Éperon d’Or) as well as ties and watch designs like Cape Cod. His work is known for symmetry, clarity, and an “ornamented but disciplined” approach that suits the carré format. Hermès continues to credit d’Origny on current product pages for his lasting designs, underscoring his influence across the silk and watch metiers.
Collector's Notes:
Among collectors, Grande Tenue is widely regarded as a core, instantly recognizable Hermès equestrian design—regularly worn and discussed, and reissued over decades in numerous palettes. The black/green/red presentation offers strong contrast that pairs easily with dark outerwear. Documented reissue cycles (from the mid-1980s through the 2010s and beyond) support its status as a “house classic,” and CS140 versions remain in steady demand across reputable resale platforms.
