Story about the Design: Designed by Dimitri Rybaltchenko, Hermès Flagship reimagines the Maison’s Faubourg landmark as a great ship at sea. The composition shows the bow with architectural paving and window-like displays where celebration is underway, while Greek gods look on and pegasuses fill the wind around the sails. The design blends maritime imagery, mythological figures, winged horses, flags, waves, and a ship-body facade to turn the Hermès world into a theatrical voyage. CityNews coverage of the Spring-Summer 2024 collections also describes the scarf as a majestic flagship with celestial beings and Greek gods, carrying a Faubourg Saint-Honoré spirit across the oceans.
Artist's Story: Dimitri Rybaltchenko is a Paris-based artist whose Hermès carré work began in 1990. In Hermès Lanterne, he explains that he grew up watching his great-uncle Philippe Ledoux and his father Vladimir Rybaltchenko draw; both were connected to Hermès scarf design. He recalls showing early drawings to Jean-Louis Dumas in June 1990, when a pelican design led to his first Hermès acceptance. Hermès notes that beyond carrés he has also worked on watch dials and the Volt’H Maxi mobile battery, and his practice centers on drawing as a means of communication, surprise, emotion, and freedom.
