Story about the Design:
Concours d’Étriers is a joyful inventory of stirrups from around the world, inspired by the Emile Hermès private collection. Jamin scatters dozens of ornate and utilitarian étriers over a ribboned ground—baroque filigree pieces sit alongside spare modern forms—so the square reads like a lively “competition” of shapes, materials and traditions. Hermès explains that the composition evokes the clink of metal and the rustle of leather; in some variants (including the giant 140 silk), a dip-dye or deep ground color makes the polished stirrups pop brilliantly when tied. The theme taps Hermès’s equestrian roots while celebrating global craftsmanship.

Artist's Story:
Virginie Jamin is a long-standing Hermès carré artist whose work bridges the house’s equestrian heritage and contemporary graphic play. Trained as an illustrator and scenographer, she has created dozens of designs for Hermès, often drawing directly from the Emile Hermès archives (collections of canes, bridles, stirrups and harnesswork). Beyond scarves, she was tapped by Hermès to design the “Tressages Équestres” tableware line, translating braided tack into rhythmic, hand-drawn patterns across Limoges porcelain. Her carré vocabulary—loops of leather, metal fittings, bold banding—wears beautifully at both 90 and 140 formats.

Collector's Notes:
Concours d’Étriers debuted in 2011 and has since appeared in multiple treatments: classic 90 twill, washed 90, the 70 “Remix” double-face, and large-format 140s including dip-dye silks and cashmere/silk shawls. The 140 silk twill is scarcer than the 90 and commands collector attention in saturated grounds (black, teal, rose/rouge). Look for crisp hand-rolled edges, strong color saturation and clear “Hermès-Paris” signatures within the stripe work. Because the motif is allover and multi-directional, it knots elegantly—stirrups and ribbons align into striking diagonals.
