Artist's Story:
Pierre Péron (1905–1988) was a Breton artist from Brest—illustrator, graphic designer, caricaturist, and Painter of the French Navy—who collaborated closely with Hermès from the early 1950s at the invitation of Robert Dumas. His œuvre for the maison includes numerous emblematic carrés such as Soleil Royal, Thalassa, Virages, Échiquier, and Quadrige. Péron’s graphic training and maritime eye informed his bold, highly legible compositions: crisp line, rhythmic repetition, and a preference for strong silhouettes that translate elegantly across silk and enamel.

Story about the Design:
“Quadrige” references the classical four-horse chariot, distilled by Péron into interlocking horse profiles—an homage to antiquity filtered through modern French graphic sensibility. The “Moderne” treatment streamlines the motif with pared-back contour drawing and high-contrast color blocks, a look that adapts especially well to Hermès’ rigid enamel bangles where the continuous circumference becomes a frieze of horses in motion. The motif recurs across multiple Hermès media (silk jacquard, embroidery, perforated editions), underscoring its status as a house icon.
