Artist's Story:
Paul Quenson is a French designer and costumier whose work spans luxury houses and the performing arts. An Hermès alumnus, he is credited with creating the “Clous en trompe l’œil” motif for the Maison’s printed-enamel jewelry in 2011. Outside Hermès, Quenson has designed for theater and opera and later served as Executive Director of Design at Anya Hindmarch. His practice blends fashion craft with a stage designer’s sense of volume and illusion, often using trompe-l’œil to translate hardware and texture into graphic relief.

“Clous en trompe l’œil” reimagines Hermès’ pyramid studs—an enduring house emblem—as a 3D optical illusion rendered on smooth enamel. Debuting in the 2011 printed-enamel collection, the motif was issued in vibrant “Peinture Acrylique” colorations as well as softer “Passé” harmonies, emphasizing light, shadow, and architectural crispness on extra-wide bangles.
