Artist's Story:
Laurence Bourthoumieux, also known as Toutsy, is a French artist and designer whose work for Hermès includes Brazil and numerous other celebrated carré designs. Her compositions are recognized for richly detailed ornament, rhythmic pattern and expressive cultural imagery.

Story about the Design:
Brazil centers on elaborate feather ornaments and ceremonial regalia associated with the Indigenous cultures of Brazil. The design presents feathers as elements of history, ritual and celebration, extending their decorative role to jewelry, hairstyles and musical instruments.

Collector's Notes:
The original Brazil carré was first issued in 1988, with a documented reissue in 1991; the related Brazil II (détail) interpretation followed in 2001. The unshaped +Q hallmark is not part of the post-2015 no-shape sequence. Because the Brazil motif debuted after 1970, the square-era Q date of 2013 is applied as an inference rather than an exact hallmark reading.
